WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the War Relief Association of Wellington was held yesterday afternoon. The Mayor presided, and referred to the help given by the association to the men who took part in the last war. That there was still a need for helping these men was shown in the fact that over 500 applications from them had been dealt with. Though the residue of the large original sum placed before the board was now small, he said, no doubt, with the assistance of the National Patriotic Fund Board, the resources of the board would be strengthened to carry on the work.

The allocation of £501 by the National War Funds Council was greatly appreciated, said Mr. L. O. bH. Tripp, the chairman, and he had no doubt that funds would be provided to carry out the work that still remained to be done.

Many of the veterans of the Great War had made further sacrifices in again placing their services as might be required for the defence of the Dominion. It was a striking example of loyalty, devotion to duly, and love of country. The emergency committee, with two representatives of the Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, continued to administer funds on behalf of that committee for the rehabilitation of men of the present fighting forces, who were dealt with in the same way as men of the former war. The committee was doing excellent work.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted.

Mr. L. O. H. Tripp was re-elected chairman, and Mr. J. Murray vicechairman of all committees, bMr. W. Duncan was elected to the executive committee, Mr. R. L. Macalister to the finance committee, and the applications committee elected consisted of Messrs. R. L. Macalister, E. C. Hale, W. H. Price, and R. Urquhart.

Alluding to the loss sustained by the association through the death of Sir Charles Luke and the resignation of Mr. Alexander Macintosh, Mr. Tripp said that his association with both in the work dated back to 1914. They had attended committee meetings, which, for many years, were held on five days a week regularly, and it was estimated that they must have attended 8000 meetings. Sir Charles Luke was chairman of the War Funds Council since 1913, and with himself a trustee of the Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund, under which the Flock House scheme was administered. He greatly appreciated the assistance they had given him.
