HUTT FIRE SERVICES
CO-OPERATION WITH CITY
"We were astonished at the statement made by Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the Wellington Fire Board, that the conference between the chairmen and superintendents of the Wellington and Petone Fire Boards and the Lower Hutt City Fire Committee had not been a success and that he left with the impression that it would be a very big fire before the Wellington brigade was called," stated a memorandum presented at the combined meeting of the Petone Fire Board and the Hutt Fire Committee yesterday. The memorandum was in reply to a public statement made by Mr. Dean, and was signed by Mr. J. W. Andrews, chairman of the Lower Hutt Fire Committee and Mr. J. Kerr, chairman of the Petone Fire Board.
Deep concern was expressed at the attitude adopted by Mr. Dean subsequent to his attending the conference of chairmen and superintendents, where he had registered no protest and was apparently satisfied with all that was being done. The memorandum concluded by saying that leadership must be given by persons possessing the complete confidence of those they lead, and such confidence was earned only by careful impartiality.
