APPOINTMENTS MADE
LONDON, February 22,
Dr. William Temple, Archbishop of York, is to succeed Dr. Lang as Archbishop of Canterbury. The new Archbishop of York is Dr. C. F. Garbett, Bishop of Winchester.
Dr. William Temple succeeds to a position formerly occupied by his father. For many years he has been in the forefront of the leaders of the Church in- the United Kingdom, and has the reputation of being a brilliant thinker and a man who speaks his mind. He has been a prolific writer. Born in the Episcopal Palace at Exeter in 1881, .he went to school at
Rugby, where his father had formerly been headmaster. Passing on to Oxford, he obtained a "double-first" and became president of the Union. His tough, burly figure was seldom seen in the streets of Oxford without some formidable volume under his arm.
After taking his degree, he was elected to a Fellowship at Queen's College, Oxford. He was ordained deacon in 1908 and priest in 1909. In 1910 he was made headmaster of Repton, and four years later he was appointed rector of St. James's, Piccadilly. It was his first experience of parish work, and it coincided with the outbreak of war.. He resigned from St. James's in 1918. On the recommendation of Mr. Lloyd. George, in 1919, he was appointed to a canonry at Westminster Abbey. He was subsequently appointed Bishop of Manchester, and in 1928 became Archbishop of York.
The Rt. Rev. Cyril Forster Garbett was born in 1875 and educated at Portsmouth Grammar School, Kebl'e College, and Cuddesdon College, Oxford. He was assistant Curate of Portsea in 1900-09, and then for ten years was Vicar of that diocese. In 1919 he
became Bishop of Southwark, and held that office until 1932. In 1915 he became Honorary Canon of Winchester and also, Rural Dean of Portsmouth.
