BEATEN BACK

ENEMY AEROPLANES

PUNISHMENT OVER JAVA

LONDON, February 22.

Allied successes in beating off Japanese air raiders over Java are a feature of today's news from the Pacific, and it is reported that heavy losses have been suffered by the enemy. •

- A Batavia message says that when 15 Japanese bombers and a number of fighters attacked an aerodrome in the western part of the island yesterday, three and possibly four enemy planes were shot down, and that when 18 Japanese fighters heading for an objective 70 miles from the capital of Batavia were encountered by Dutch fighters four were shot down and another was damaged so badly that it was almost certainly destroyed.

The Dutch lost two planes but the pilots are safe.

One Dutch machine, after ramming a Japanese plane, managed to escape uninjured. The other pilot was wounded.

Another enemy bomber was shot down 50 miles south of Surabaya.
