While acting as an official at the Otago athletic championships at the Caledonian ground yesterday afternoon, Mr. Charles W. Frye was struck with a hammer thrown by a competiitor in the hammer-throwing event. Mr. Frye was admitted to hospital with ! severe face and head injuries, and died at 11.50 last night. He was formerly a prominent cross-country runner and won the New Zealand title in 1920. Dock workers now in the Army in a north of England town formed a volunteer labour corps, and when on leave give some of their time to unloading ships. A fine of £2 on a charge of offensive behaviour, and a fine of 10s on a charge of drunkenness were imposed upon James Dale, metal worker, aged 53, by Mr. J. L.
