ABSENT-MINDED
Lessing, the great German author, was subject in his old age to extraordinary fits of abstraction.
When he returned home one evening he knocked as usual on his door. A servant looked out, but not recognising Lessing in the dark, and mistaking him for a stranger, called out, "The master is not at home."
"Oh, very well," replied Lessing. "No matter. I'll call another time!"
Somebody has been recalling the fact that Adolf Schicklgruber tried to be an architect and failed. As he had not brain enough to put things up he began to pull things down, says a commentator.
A woman switched on the wireless a few minutes late for the beginning of the news, and heard that "fighting had ceased." The news related to the recent Armistice in Persia, but the woman rushed out to tell her neighbours the war was over!
