TROOPS IN FIJI
VAD.'S For Middle East.
The troops who left New Zealand in the middle of December and early in January are in Fiji, stated the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) today in reply to an inquiry.
The party of V.A.D.s and medical reinforcements that sailed on a hospital ship just before Christmas proceeded to the Middle East.
article continues. "It is claimed that the ban will eliminate many forms of speculation, and concentrate, capital transfers on immediate war needs. Perhaps it will, but at what cost?
"If the proposal really aeans what it seems to mean, it must result in the complete freezing of investments. Is it supposed that money will be freely forthcoming for new war loans when investment markets are frozen up?
"It has been a cardinal point in Britain's financial policy that stock markets should function freely, subject to certain necessary curbs on speculation." The writer's opinion on the proposal to peg profits is that a rigid 4 per cent, maximum on "capital" is not likely to encourage maximum output.
