AUSTRALIAN DECREE

AWAY WITH NON-ESSENTIAL

INDUSTRIES

(Rec. 9 a.m.) . SYDNEY, Feb. 18,

A number of factories in Victoria and South Australia are to be closed shortly as the first step in the Federal Government's policy of eliminating non-essential industries and diverting their employees to war work.

An announcement to this effect was made. tonight by ■ the Minister of War Organisation of Industry, Mr. J. J. Dedman, who said that the decree would operate from February 28. Those affected would include manufacturers of art metal ceilings, architectural ornaments, advertising showcards, bath heaters, billiard tables, carpet sweepers, cement ornaments, children's tricycles and scooters, confectionery and cordial machines, deck chairs, electric washing machines, fancy earthenware, leather cases, fur coats and similar garments, men's evening dress wear, ■ racecourse equipment, musical instruments, skates, jewellery, paper novelties, walking sticks, and all types Qf .machinery for the manufacture of the foregoing articles.
