CASUALTIES IN H.M.S. HOOD
Casualties in H.M.S. Hood, the 42,000----ton British battle-cruiser which was blown up in the battle with the Bismarck on May 24, numbered 1418, all "missing, presumed killed." Their names appeared in a 43-page Admiralty casualty list. Ninety-four were officers, 1152 ratings, 161 Royal Marines, four Royal Australian Navy ratings, and seven were members of N.A.A.F.I. staffi The officers lost included Vice-Admiral Lancelot Ernest Holland, aged 53, a gunnery expert, who has been described as one of the outstanding officers of his generation, and Captain Ralph Kerr (in command), Four Polish midshipmen were among the casualties. The lists of ratings and marines include the names of 90 boys. Three survivors of the Hood were reported within a few days of the battle —Midshipman Dundas, aged 17, who was on his first voyage, Ordinary Signalman A. E. P. Briggs, of Derby, and Seaman Robert Ernest Tilburn, of Roundhay, Leeds.
