BOTH SIDES RETICENT
WAR IN RUSSIA
MORE SOVIET GAINS
LONDON, February 18,
While both the Russians and the Germans have recently maintained an official silence about particular major operations, the "Red Star" says that on various fronts Soviet troops have fought their way deeply into the major defence lines which the Germans had constructed and which they were hoping to hold until the spring.
Reports reaching Moscow say that on the north-west front Russian cavalry units have advanced many miles into the German rear and are making a path for the main Soviet forces which aim at the relief of Leningrad.
The recapture by the Russians of three more inhabited localities is announced by Moscow radio in a special broadcast. In recapturing these places, the announcer said, Russian troops had .wiped out more than 500 enemy troops and destroyed considerable quantities of war material.
Today's official news from Moscow reports the smashing of a German counter-attack in the south-western part of the Kharkov front. The Germans also mention fighting in the Ukraine, and admit that they had faced heavy Russian attacks supported by many tanks and bombers.
