On his retirement after 25 years as secretary to the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Timber Workers' Union Mr. John Read was entertained at afternoon tea at the Trades Hall by the Trades Union Secretaries' Association and presented with a well-filled wallet. The chairman of the Trades Council, Mr. F. P. Walsh, said that much of the progress of the Labour movement had been due to the early work done for trade unionism by men like Mr. Read, for it had paved the way for the success of the political side.
