SCOUTING FORCES

WITHDRAWN BY AXIS

ACTIVITY IN LIBYA

LONDON, February 17,

In Libya, General Rommel has withdrawn his reconnoitring detachments which have been operating in front of our Gazala positions during the past few days.

The desert south of a line from Gazala to Mekili now appears to be clear of the enemy forces though they are in considerable strength around Mekili itself.

Our mobile columns and fighting patrols, supported by aircraft, were active throughout yesterday and attacked enemy light forces from the north-west of Gazala southwards to a point 50 miles inland.
