The Russians are still maintaining silence about their operations and are contenting themselves with claiming the capture of various unnamed strongholds. | It is thought this reticence may he due to military considerations, I or may reffect the stiffening Ger- . man resistance being encountered ! now that the Russians, are driving I into the more strongly fortified I German lines. •'.' Today's Moscow communique tells !ol further Soviet successes on the Leningrad front, where in two days' fighting vast quantities of war material have been captured and 1500 German soldiers killed, I GERMAN LINES PIERCED. The German communique admits that the Russians have pierced the German lines on the Smolensk front, 50 miles south-east of Vyazma. The credit will be used to purchase military equipment and munitions. It is understood that United States deliveries to Russia, which at first were not up to schedule, have now been speeded up.
According to Berlin radio, large German forces have been moved from the Orel front to the Vyazma front.
"Pravda" quotes a captured German officer for the statement that the German army is preparing to leav» Kharkov.
