DUTCHMAN'S RACE

BEAT ENEMY IN BORNEO

BATAVIA, February 17.

The first eye-witness story from Banjtermassin, which is now in Japanese hands, has been brought by refugees who reached Java from Borneo in a small Government ship.

One Dutchman from an evacuated settlement 50 miles north of Balik Papan remained behind until the Japanese were 10 miles distant, then set fire to the settlement and escaped in the jungle.

Then he carefully stalked the Japanese column moving towards Banjermassin and finally raced on and arrived at Banjermassin ahead of the Japanese and reported their strength.

Twenty-four hours later Banjermassin was a blazing inferno.

The ship put to sea, picking up women from various settlements ' in Borneo.
