COLLEGE LIGHTS

WINDOWS TO BE SCREENED

Continued complaints about the brightness of the windows of the Wellington Technical College at night were brought to the notice of the college authorities by the Mayor, who has insisted that the college shall comply with the regulations regarding reduction of lighting from all buildings.

Arrangements are now being made to screen the windows.

The director of the college, Mr. R. G^ Ridling, explained the past position to a "Post" reporter today. So much had been published concerning the lights of the college that readers might believe that the Board of Managers was without a due care for public safety, he said. That was not so. Last year, wh^n the lighting regulations required that sky glare should be reduced, all lights in the building were screened to such a degree that the lighting became inefficient, and that was still the position.

Prior to the issue of the more definite regulations in February, the board obtained quotations for screening all the windows, and an application was made to the Government for funds, but a favourable reply was delayed. Advice had now been received that funds would be granted, and before long arrangements would be made to screen windows in a satisfactory manner.

Mr. Ridling added that it was essential to continue the night classes, for to close the college at night would mean that training of entrants to industry and commerce would cease, and that pre-entry education training for Air Force units would have to be carried out elsewhere. However, the difficulty over funds was now overcome.
