WELLINGTON CARD

SEVEN-RACE PROGRAMME

(By "Binocular.")

The Wellington Racing Club has made one or two adjustments in its' programme for the Autumn Meeting, to be held at Trentham on March 7 and 14. A seven-race card has been drawn up, the Trial Plate, 7 furlongs, having been omitted from the opening day's activities, and the Hutt Handicap, 1 mile, disappears from the second day. Further, "whereas the Thompson Handicap, 1 mile, formerly graced the card on the first day and the Autumn Handicap, 1 mile and 3 furlongs, the second day, they have now been reversed. Otherwise, the programme is the same as in 1941, the club having maintained the stake-money at its former high figure. Nominations for all events, and also forfeit for the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes and the North Island Challenge Stakes', close at 5 o'clock on Monday evening. Higher Scale. The Woodville handicapper* has awarded Night Eruption 9.0 in the Cup race on Saturday, 141b more than she had at Otaki, and the Nightmarch mare has been advanced 131b in the open sprint. At Otaki last Saturday a 21b allowance was claimed for her in the Ta Timi Kara Handicap, in which she ran third, and a 71b allowance brought her weight down to. 7.8 in the Taipua Handicap, which she won. Seemingly there is again a prospect of Night Eruption attempting the double, but her task will be more difficult in this instance. Won On Course. Winner of the Ashhurst Cup under 7.3, Talenta ran third in the Egmont Cup with 7.12, but she failed to gain a place in the Tonks Stakes, 9 furlongs. She returns to the Ashhurst course on Saturday, but in the Woodville Cup the higher scale of weights finds her in at 8.9. It is a substantial rise, but she is big enough to carry it. Failed. In the big race at Otaki on Saturday the Hunting Song mare Diana Tetrix was well placed in the early stages, but she commenced to drift a long way from home. She was allowed in at 8.9 in the Woodville Cup. the poundage being only 41b. more than she had at Otaki, but she dropped out. Paid Penalty. Weighted at 7.5 in the Ta Timi Kara Handicap at Otaki, Young Charles was ridden by the young apprentice, G. Waddell, who claimed the full 51b allowance. In the Woodville Cup, however, he has 8.6, and even though a 71b allowance can be claimed on the day the Resinous gelding has seemingly paid for his minor placing of Saturday. Not Fulfilled. When Black Robe ran third to Duncannon and Tuatara in the Pohangina Handicap at the Ashhurst Meeting it looked as though she would improve on that placing at an early date, but she failed at Egmont. At her earlier outing on the Ashhurst course she carried 7.13, whereas in the Ruahine Handicap at the Woodville fixture she has 31b more. It is quite possible that an apprentice allowance will be Claimed for her, and she may improve on her Hawera showings. Disappointed. With L. J. Ellis in the saddle, the Hastings-trained Darag came in for solid support in the scurry event at Otaki, but after showing plenty of early speed after a smart jump-out he was beaten into fourth. The Bulandshar gelding should be capable of bet-' ter things. Looked Well. Golden Moon looked very well when she paraded for the Manuao Hack Handicap at Otak% but she was beaten for early speed and had to be content with sixth place. By Tiderace from Fintry, this filly is a granddaughter of Desert Gold, but turning tracks are rather against her. Making Amends. Asa two-year-old High Tone was a complete failure, but she showed some improvement by filling minor placings on three occasions this term prior to the second day of the Hawera Meeting. The overdue win came in the Meremere Hack Handicap, a seven-fur-long event for apprentice riders./ She comes from a useful family, an elder half-brother. Grateful, having been a good winner over varying distances. Lacks Inches. Greatly improved form has been displayed of late by the Inflation filly Duality, who filled second place in both the Douro and Nolan Cups. Her dam, Ingenuity, was an Australian-bred mare by High Art from the Ladas mare Lade who raced in the same interests. Like her daughter, she was a shade small, but she lacked nothing in gameness. Well Related. Although his record has not been particularly impressive this season, there was good support for Odtaa in the Rotorua Cup, and the faith was not misplaced. Patrons apparently had not forgotten his bad luck in the Matamata Cup, when he came from a long way back for third. He is a younger full-brother to that former useful sort, Scotland. Both are by Acre from the Robert the Bruce mare Bonny Mabel, who traces back to imported Kilmorey.
