His Excellency the Governor-General presided at a meeting, of the Executive Couricif this morning.

Mr. F. H. Griffith, of Wellington, has been appointed presiuent of the New Zealand Hardware Merchants Guild for a second term.

Mr. R. I. M. Sutherland, of Wellington, was elected president of the Royal New Zealand Aero Club at the annual meeting today. Messrs. W. H. Shepherd (Dunedin) and W. L. Wiseman (Auckland) were elected vice-presidents.

Mr. C. S. Luney, president of the New Zealand Builders' Federation, arrived from the south yesterday.

The nominations of Mr. R.C. Porter, Auckland, and Mr. R. Burn, Wellington, as manufacturers' representatives on the Industrial Standards and Testing Committee have been approved by the Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan).

In the absence of Mr. H. P. Kidson on military service, the position of, rector of the Otago Boys' High SchoOl has been taken over by Mr. F. H. Campbell. Mr. T. R. Cresswell, a former headmaster of Wellington College, is assisting Mr. Campbell as a member of the school staff.

Engineer-Rear-Admiral G. W. Bodell, of the Navy Office, Wellington, arrived from Auckland today. The Hon. P. X Paikea, member of the Executive Council representing the Native race, was a passenger by the Limited express from Auckland today. Dr. A. W. H. West, of Dunedin, has been appointed temporary lecturer, in modern languages at Auckland University College. He is an ex-pupil of the college, from which he. graduated. aS Master of Arts with first-class honours in Latin and French iri 1927. He/was awarded the French travelling.scholar-, ship and was at the . University of Paris from 1928 to 1931, graduating from there as Doctor of Languages. Prior to his appointment at Auckland University he was acting headmaster at the John McGlashan College, Dunedin. '

Captain A. Davies, superintendent ;bf mercantile marine at Dunedin, has-been appointed to the same post.in Auckland and will be succeeded at Dunedin by Captain L. Robertson,. at. present acting superintendent of marine in Auckland. Formerly nautical surveyor of ships in Auckland, Captaiii Davies left towards the end of 1939 to take up the position in Dunedin \svhen it was made vacant by the transfer of Captain H. Dillner. Captain Davies, who was born in London, spent the first 12 years of his sea-going life in sailing ships of the Shaw. Savill Line, trading mainly to Australia and New Zealand. He then joined the Union Steam Ship Company and was * appointed pilot of the Wellington Har- ' b'mr Board in 1914. Six years later he became attached to the Marine Department in Auckland as nautical sur-., veyor of ships. Captain. Robertson has been associated with the Marine Department in Auckland for a number -of years, from 1928 to 1941 as a surveyor of ships and since then as acting superintendent of marine following the death of Captain Dillner. In ' his . er rlier days Captain Robertson was. a second officer on the barquentine La Bella, which ran on the Warrnambool reef and was wrecked while'carrying timber between New Zealand and Australia, -
