AUCKLAND CONTEMPLATING -WOMEN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 16. The employment" of women on Auckland trams, was discussed by the Transport Board when notification was received that a Government order had been made authorising tramway controlling bodies to call back workers for an additional" day weekly, such workers to-be ,given a minimum of eight hours' work and paid time and a half, Sunday not to be regarded as an additional.day. under the : order, .The. engineer-manager,. Mr. Ford," said they "should -endeavour;'to fill vacancies as they occurred and work a sixth'day only when essential. When the cost of the sixth day became large enough to "warrant structural1 alterations, .consideration could be given to the employment of women. To 'employ women would cost 14 to 20 per cent, more than men, and it would \ take approximately 120 women to do the work of 100 men. After a discussion, the board referred the ? question' of employing women to the chairman and manager for investigation and report. -
