AIR-RAID TUNNEL

A.A. SUPPORTS PLAN

! With an eye on its subsequent use for relief of city parking troubles, the Automobile Association (Wellington) last night decided to support the proposal, put forward by Mr. F. de J. Clere, that an air-raid shelter, in the form of a tunnel, be built under The Terrace. Mr. Clere's proposal was for the driving of a tunnel or temporarily disconnected lengths of tunnel under The Terrace, to provide shelter for a very much larger number of people than could possibly be provided for in city buildings, removed from fire, heat, and smoke dangers. After a lengthy discussion, during which Mr. Clere outlined the scheme the following motion was carried: — "That the council of the Automobile Association (Wellington) gives its approval and support to the proposals as outlined by Mr. F. de J. Clere for the construction of a tunnel running under The Terrace with adits at appropriate intervals as an immediate means of providing shelter from air raids, and also as a means of ultimately relieving traffic problems on return to normal times, thereby creating a valuable asset. in perpetuity for the city; that accordingly ay letter be sent to the Wellington Gity- Council requesting that immediate consideration be given by the council to this practical proposal."
