The main news from the Pacific still centres around the terrific air and naval battle going on in, the Strait of Macassar. The latest Allied attack on the .Japanese irmatta (reporter in some messages to number 100 warships and transports) was carried out by American Flying Fortresses yesterday,

The bombers scored a direct hit on a cruiser outside the harbour at Balik Papan, sank a large enemy transport, and set another on fire.

Japanese fighter planes which tried to break up the bomber formation were roughly handled. Two were shot down and a third damaged.

All the planes returned safely
