MORE SUCCESSES

Russians On Northern And

Southern Fronts

LONDON, January 8.

The Russians have had new successes in the north and in the Crimea. Tonight's Russian communique speaks of the continued frustration of the German attempts to dig themselves in on a new defence line.

Other reports tell of the heroic defenders of Sebastopol breaking through the German siege after launching attacks which were aimed at sweeping the Germans out of the Crimea altogether.

Other Russian forces threaten to crush the Germans in their own siege lines. A Finnish communique admits continuous Russian attacks north of Lake Ladoga.

By the recapture of Meshovsk, 130 miles south-west of Moscow and 33 miles west of Kaluga, the southern | part of the Soviet pincer movement on the main Mosgow front now appears to be thrusting northwards. It is pointed out in London that a true pincer movement is thus developing, with the northern prong in the IVlojaisk area and the southern prong at Meshovsk. A distance of well over 100 miles lies between the prongs. Russian landing parties in the Crimea are credited with having

secured new bridgeheads during the night. These are in addition to those obtained at Kerch, Theodosia, and Eupatoria. Berlin is said to be anticipating further landings. (Rec. noon.) LONDON, Jan. 8. Intense fighting on the Leningrad front is reported by the "Isvestia." Russian mobile detachments outflanked a number of German centres of resistance. The Germans are counter-at-tacking in an attempt to break the tightening circle. An official German announcement states that Herr Himmler, chief of the Nazi police, has established his own ! headquarters on the Eastern Front.
