EARLIER CLOSING TIMES
MAIL SERVICES
To facilitate the release or further officers for military service, several changes in the Wellington postal services are to operate as from next Monday. Letter mails will be closed at the Chief Post Office four times daily, 8 a.m., noon, 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. The principal dispatches affected are for the Auckland and Main Trunk districts, which will close at noon in lieu of 1.30 p.m., and for South Island and Auckland district offices at 4 p.m. in lieu of 5 p.m. Registered letter mails will close at the same time as letter mails. Parcel mails will be closed twice daily, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. While second-class matter (both inward and outward) will continue to be handled with all expedition practicable in present circumstances, the Post Office can no longer continue the expeditious handling that it has been customary to provide for certain classes of such matter. The express-delivery service has been abolished. At present no alteration will be made in the closing time for air mails or for late-fee letters. OVERSEAS MAILS. To clarify the uncertainty about overseas mails as a consequence of the outbreak of war in the Pacific, the chief postmaster, Mr. A. Pellow, said yesterday that the only service interrupted was by clipper all the way from New Zealand to the United States and thence via Lisbon to England. The best dispatch at the moment was probably by surface from New Zealand to the United States and thence by air to Great Birtain via Lisbon. The air mail services to Singapore and the Middle East were continuing to function.
