FURIOUS BATTLES RAGING
LONDON, December 2.
The most furious battles of the Libyan campaign are now raging in the region of Sidi Rezegh, following a desperate assault by the Germans yesterday which resulted in the linking up of their northern and southern forces. The link-up was effected through the vital corridor to Tobruk, six miles north-east of Sidi Rezegh. Describing the temporary Axis success, the Cairo communique says that yesterday the enemy threw all his available armour into the battle on a comparatively narrow front. Very heavy fighting went on throughout the day in the area formed by Sidi Rezegh, Bir el Hamed, and Zarran. The enemy now occupies Sidi Rezegh and Bir el Hamed. It is recognised both in Cairo and London that Tobruk itself is not isolated. It is impossible to draw a clear picture of the situation while the present confused and swiftmoving battle is in progress. The British and Imperial forces are now fighting furiously to restore the position in the corridor. In spite of the setback, Cairo spokesmen have reiterated their confidence in the final result.
