JEWELS RECOVERED
DETECTIVE ON BOARD A
LINER
(P.A.)' AUCKLAND, December 2. Jewellery valued at 15,000 dollars, stolen from a suite on a vessel crossing' the Pacific, has been recovered by a noted American detective, Mr. John Carver. The jewellery, consisting of rings, earrings, and brooches, was surrendered and four men were placed under-surveillance aboard the liner. The property of Senora A. Santos, wife of Senor Mario Santos, newlyappointed Consul for Brazil in Australia and New Zealand, the jewellery was taken from her suite aboard the liner. Senora Santos had temporarily left the suite and returned to find the jewels gone from her dressing-table. Joining the-liner en route with other United States police officers on another assignment, Detective Carver was called in to investigate ,the robbery. He kept close watch at various ports of call. Fear was felt at one stage that those aboard who were concealing the jewellery might be tempted to dispose of the incriminating evidence by throwing it overboard. An offer was made, however, to Senoi Santos to return it and the jewellery was hantied back before the end of the voyage.
