OBITUARY

MR. W. R. KINGSTON-SMITH

The death occurred suddently yesterday of Mr. W. R. Kingston-Smith, Karori, a member of the staff of the National Broadcasting Service, Mi*. Kingston-Smith, who was 39 years old, was a recent recruit to broadcasting from the field of journalism.

The eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Kingston-Smith, Dunedin, he entered journalism some 12 years ago as a

member of the Auckland "Sun" staff. He was for several years editor of the "N.Z. Financial Times" and was also editor of "Legion," the organ of the New Zealand Legion, and circulation manager of the "Farmers' Weekly." On moving to Wellington, he became manager of the Yaffa news syndicate. Last year he joined the staff of the "N.Z. Listener," but recently transferred to the N.B.S. news service. Mr. Kingston-Smith was a deacon of the Wellington Central Baptist Church. He was also a keen debater and had lectured for the W.E.A. He leaves a widow and two children.

MR! E. W. FORD

The death occurred suddenly at his residence, Crieff Street. Northland, on Wednesday evening, of Mr. Ernest Walter Ford, assistant quantity surveyor of the Housing Construction Department. Mr. Ford, who was 61 years of age, was well known in Wellington when he was formerly in business here as a building contractor, and at the time of his death was secretary of the Clerks of Works Association of New Zealand. Wellington branch. He was a native of London and came to Wellington in 1921, and was engaged in business on his own account till 1939. when he joined the staff of the Housing Construction Department. As a young man he was a keen cricketer and Association footballer, having been a member of the Fulham Association Football -Club. He was an enthusiastic chess player, and was a member of the Ngaio and Karori Chess Club. In the last war he served with the Royal Flying Corps and afterwards with the R.A.F. in France. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mrs. J. F. G. Hammon. of Paraparaumu, and one son, Mr. Walter Ford, who is a member of the Wanganui Collegiate School staff.
