HALTED ON OUTSKIRTS

PUSH TOWARDS TULA

SOVIET DONETS BASIN MOVE

(Rec. 12.45 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 23.

German tanks and infantry are keeping up their pressure on some sectors of the Moscow front. "Pravda" says that the Germans again succeeded in making some advance in the Volokalamsk and Mojaisk sectors, and in the area south-eastwards of Tula.

German tanks pierced the Russian lines in the Tula sectorj but were halted on the outskirts of theybity. The Germans are persistently'attacking along the Volokalamsk highway, where effective Russian counter-action has stemmed the drive. German attempts, made more to the south, to cross the River Naro again, failed with heavy casualties. Fighting continued until nightfall, and in some cases went on all night. There were no serious engagements and no substantial changes in the Narofominsk and Malo Yaroslavets sectors. Heavy fighting is proceeding in the direction of Kursk, where the Germans brought up large tank forces and succeeded in advancing slightly. The Russians cut up three battalions of infantry. The Russian infantry* strongly supported by artillery, captured several villages in the southern sector of the Kursk front. In one day they wiped out 1000 Germans. RAILWAY STATION BEACHED. The "Red Star" says that German tanks reached the railway station at Rostov, where fighting was particularly fierce, the Germans paying dearly for every yard of their advance. In the past two days the Russians killed and wounded thousands of German soldiers, and the air force in the past four days is estimated to have wiped out 4000 soldiers and destroyed dozens of tank?.. . * Major Russian successes are reported in the Donets, Basin, where ten. large villages were recaptured. The Germans lost two of five battalions, the Russian Stormoviks dealing terrific blows against the German reinforcements. "Izvestia" says that Russian troops are forcing their way towards the River "T"' in this sector. To this the Germans attach great importance. The Germans have concentrated picked troops and massed guns there, but accurate Russian artillery fire destroyed the German bases.

It is reported from Kuibyshev that Major-General Panfilov was killed on the Moscow front a week after his rifle division had received the title of the Red Banner.
