LIFTING BULBS
It is pretty well understood that to lift bulbs while the foliage is stillgreen or to cut the foliage off when green is detrimental to the bulbs, resulting in poor results the following season, It is from the foliage that the bulb stores up energy for next season, and, consequently, the longer the foliage rernai.ns active the better the results.
The general complaint is that .after flowering when the foliage grows rank, the bulb clumps are unsightly. This may be overcome to some extent by tying down the foliage, but in any case it should not be cut oft'-
Some of the earliest flowering bulbs, both narcissi ,and others, are already becoming dormant, and where i' is desired to lift them the work should be done as soon as possible,' as their season of /rest is comparatively short. They should be lifted when dry, if possible, amj after the earth has been shaken off they may be placed in a shed to dry- -As soon as they are thoroughly dry the foliage may be pulled away-, as well as the roots, and the bulbs be cleaned generally. If they are to be stored they should be spread out on shallow trays, as they are apt pa heat an 4 rot if placed in sacks.'
