TERFUTORIAL SERVICE

The difilcliitieis being experienced iri the matter of staff by the Railway De» partrnent as a result of the war W6fe mentioned at a sitting of No. 6a ManPower Committee yesterday, whe~n appeals were lodged for thi'ee porters in respect of Territorial service. It was stated that porters could riot be Spared if it wets decided to maintain a reasonable train service, especially1 during the busy season now approaching. The Department had lost 3744 men to the armSd forces, and, in addition, 672 were iii Territorial Gamps at the present time. Th§ three men appealed for were carrying out work normally undertaken by men with Wn years' experience. It was suggested that Territorials on the traffic operating side of the railways might be attached to the E.P.S. because, in the Sveiit of art emergency, they would be required for railway operations and could hot be released to strengthen their TSrri* .torial companies.
The committee dismissed the appeals, conditional on feaeh reservist being called upon to perform his intensive Territorial training during the months of June, July, and August, 1942.
