AN ULTIMATUM

AUXILIARY FIREMEN

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, October 31

A threat of resignation by auxiliary firemen in the employ of the Invercargill Fire Board was withdrawn by the men at a special meeting of the board tonight. It was announced that the Chief Inspector of Fire-Brigades, Mr. Girling Butcher, would visit Invercargill early next week to conduct an inquiry into questions which have been made the subject of discussion lately. The firemen have agreed to work under the deputy superintendent till after the inquiry.

An ultimatum presented to the Fire Board by the auxiliary firemen and due to expire at midnight • tonight might have resulted in the brigade losing the services of its 18 auxiliary men. The men demanded the reinstatement of the superintendent, Mr. F. S. Simpson, who resigned from/the board's service last week and has been released on leave, and announced that they were not prepared to act under the deputy superintendent, Mr. R. A. Robertson. The board then sought the intervention of the Minister of Internal Affairs. \~, ' ; .
