HOUSES ON TOWN BELT

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l read "W.C.L.'s" letter in the "Evening Post" advocating the erection of houses on the Town Belt. I for one very strongly oppose such a course. I am a Wellingtonian, born here and proud of the' old folk who had the courage and forethought to set aside for all time the present Town Belt, providing a vast open space on which the children of our city can roam and play. Show me the acres on which no human foot has trod. I have played on and know every, foot of it, and breathed the free air of the hills right thrqugh my boyhood. "W.S.L." complains that some are forced to go to the Hutt to live. What a shame! What about London; do they build houses in Hyde Park or "Rotten Row, or do thousands go to the suburbs to live and waste time coming to the city to work? Perhaps Councillor Nimmo knows of some park in the middle of Edinburgh city on which they build houses.—l am, etc., AERY.
