ENEMY CONCENTRATIONS
TANKS AND INFANTRY BEFORE MOSCOW
SERIOUS POSITION
(Rec. 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 30.
German attempts to advance on the right flank characterise the present situation on the central front, says the Moscow radio. The position is serious at Volokalamsk, where the enemy has concentrated large tank and infantry forces and has succeeded in capturing several inhabited points, one of which the Red army retook.
The Germans, after regrouping their forces, are again desperately attempting to drive a wedge in the Kalinin sector, but the Russians are holding the •enemy there.
The Germans have made a slight advance in the Orel sector at the cost of heavy losses, including over 100 tanks.
The "Red Star" says that the German casualties in the Crimea so far total 20,000 killed and wounded.
Berlin radio claimed that the Soviet casualties up to the end of August totalled between 4,500,000 and 5,000*000 including sick.
A Berlin communique states: "Ger-
man forces, relentlessly pursuing • the enemy in the Crimea Peninsula, took several thousand prisoners. The German and allied troops in pursuit of the enemy in the Donets Basin have reached the upper course of the Don on a broad front. Our heavy artillery is attacking objectives at Leningrad, and offensive" operations are continuing between Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga."
