THORNDON CLUB
The intention of the club to hold several tournaments for patriotic purposes during the coming months was mentioned by Mr. W. I. Clark, president of the Thondon Bowling Club, at the opening of the forty-seventh season today. He urged the maximum support for the tournaments and other activities to help the war effort. There was a large attendance. Mr. Clark referred with deep regret to the death of six former members, Messrs. P. M. Cameron, A. E." Boyes, A. Gower, E. J. Archibald, G. Godfrey, and C. Chittey, and of sons of members on active service overseas.. The gathering stood in silence for a few moments.
The club's comfortable financial "position and full membership, improvements carried out to the frontage and other proposad major improvements, and the excellent development of the green were other matters mentioned by Mr. Clark. He stated that there would be no play for at least a week as.a result of the recent heavy rain. Mr. T. Lock, president of the Wellington Bowling Centre, who has become a member of the club, and Mr. C. H. Chapman, member for the district, also spoke, complimenting the club on its progress and wishing it a successful season. Mrs. Clark sent up the first kitty, and Mr. H. Buxton, the club's oldest member, played the first bowl. Afternoon tea was then served.
