QUALITIES PROVED
MARYLAND BOMBERS IN
ACTION
RUGBY, October 9,
Again, the speed and fighting qualities of the American .Maryland bombers have been proved in combat over the Western Desert, says the Air Ministry news service. A South African bomber squadron, when returning from a raid, was attacked by MelO9's over the frontier area south of Capuzzo. Not only were the South Africans able to beat off the enemy fighters without loss to themselves, but they also shot down one Messerschmitt in flames, while another was so badly damaged that it is doubtful if it could regain its base.
Though the destruction of the Messerschmitt took place after only a few minutes of fighting, the formation of Marylarids engaged the 109s for 10 minutes. The shock to the German pilots must have been considerable, since they were flying the new >MelO9 aircraft, which are claimed by the enemy to be the fastest fighters in the world.—B.O.W.
