AXIS RAID REPULSED
NEW ENEMY TACTICS
NO MAN'S LAND FIGHT
LONDON, October 10.
Empire land forces at Tobruk have dealt successfully with another enemy tank attack. On Wednesday the enemy again used tanks in the area outside the defences with the object of seriously hampering patrol activities. In the south-western sector, one patrol captured a machine-gun and other equipment. This was the second enemy tank action on two successive nights. Both were made in an attempt to wrest from Empire troops the mastery of the land outside the defences.
It is. stated in London that the enemy also made night bombing attacks on Tobruk on Wednesday. About 50 aircraft came over in two waves and attacked gun sites while enemy artillery opened fire on the harbour. The enemy achieved no good results and four stukas were hit. ,«■ British naval aircraft also destroyed more enemy shipping in the Mediterranean in attacks on Wednesday night Two direct hits with torpedoes were scored on a 6000-ton enemy merchant ship, which sank in ten minutes. The crew was picked up by escorting vessels. A few hours later R.A.F. bombers made a low-level attack on a number of enemy merchant ships off the coast of Tripoli and one ship of 10,000 tons was badly damaged.
