RUSSIANS' SUCCESS

REASONS SEEN

NATIONAL SPIRIT AND GOOD

MECHANICAL SENSE

(Rec. Noon.) RUGBY, October 10,

In the opinion "of Mr. Harriman, the two chief reasons for the remarkable resistance which the Russian forces and people are showing are the fact that the German invasion has produced a consolidation of the spirit of nationalism and the fact that the Russians made such good use of mechanisation.

To his mind, the way in which the Russians have been able to face the invading army is because they have learned how to use machines. United States mechanics, he said, had reported

that no group of British or United States airmen had ever been so quick to understand or become proficient in the use of the new types of aircraft recently delivered to Russia.

Mr. Harriman said that the Russian population was being fed well, and according to normal standards.

The United States, he said, was assisting in improving the railway through Persia along which some of the British and United States supplies would reach Russia, and in providing rolling-stock.

His impression of the Russian leaders was of very "earnest men fighting for their country.

Both he and Lord Beaverbrook were impressed by the striking personality of M. Stalin, whom Lord Beaverbrook described as "alert, very active,, and clear in mind."—B.O.W.
