SILK STOCKINGS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Please allow me a small margin of space to reply to the statement by the Hon. Mr. Nash about the shipping of stockings to New Zealarfd. He stated that owing to a certain .ship being sunk with a cargo of silks and machinery for New Zealand, it had been impossible to cope with the demand. I myself have just returned from England, and I may • state that silk stockings are very scarce, owing to the fact that many of the big factories are employed in the making of munitions, and the female sex do not seem to worry over silks so much as getting on with the job of settling the war. And again, why send to England, when the best stockings can be obtained at a low. cost in Colombo? In Colombo the shops and bazaars are stocked with silks for the ladies—at cheap prices. There would be no shortage if the Government Hvould grant the permit.—l am, etc.,

G. H. ELLIOTT.
