MR. J. J. RODGERS

One of the best-known men in the teaching profession in Wellington, Mr. John Joseph Rodgers, died at his home in Upper Hutt yesterday at the age of 65. He had retired from the headmastership of the Clyde Quay School only at the end of last year.

All the later part of Mr. Rodgers's life was spent in the Wellington district, and those with whom he came in contact set great store by his character. He was first assistant at

Island Bay school for a number of years, and then he was successively •headmaster at Upper Hutt, Kilbirnie,

and Clyde Quay, holding the lastmentioned position for seven years. In his younger days Mr. Rodgers was a keen sportsman, playing football and winning Wellington representative honours on the cricket field. In later years he devoted much of his leisure time to bowling, being a member of the Hataitai Club for about 12 years. A member of the match committee, he was one of the most influential and popular members of the club, and he became widely known to the bowlers of Wellington.

Mrs. Rodgers died some years ago, and there is one son and one daughter.

The esteem in which Mr. Rodgers was held was shown by the representative attendance at the funeral which took place at Upper Hutt today, after Requiem Mass at St. Joseph's Church*
