GIFT TO WAR FUNDS

A gift of £500 to the Government to be used in the prosecution of the war was sanctioned unanimously at the half-yearly meeting of the Otago district committee of the M.U.L0.0.F. on. Saturday. .
The provincial corresponding secretary, Mr. A. Sligo, who moved the vote,* said that the. lodges were exempt from taxation, but it was time that they did something substantial to support the war effort.
The lodges, he added, should give consideration to subscribing almost to the limit of their capacity, The district's combined funds totalled about £462,000, which in the hands of an individual or. another organisation would be liable to £ 15;000 a. year in taxation as unearned income. -
By another resolution the meeting decided to cancel the affiliation of the Otago district1 with the Dominion Friendly ; Societies' Cqunpil,. which, it was stated, had failed lamentably in its task and no longer represented the opinion of the lodge in presenting cases. ; ... '
