GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S INTEREST
"One great pleasure •on my arrival in New Zealand was to see all the English flowers: it does make it look like i Home," said his Excellency the Gover-inor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, when opening the spring show of the East Harbour Horticultural Society, held on Saturday. The fine display of blooms attracted many people.
His Excellency, who was welcomed by the Mayor, Mr.; E..Wise, went on to say that he. had been to a good many flower shows, and had annually visited that at Chelsea, He congratulated Eastbourne upon its exhibits, and said that he had been particularly . impressed by the tiny baskets shown by the children. -Gardening in England was being carried <on as' usual and catalogues were being- issued. Flower and vegetable seeds were; being sent from England to prisoners of. war, so that they might have i their own gardens.
'The placings for the prize for the tables competition were:—
Eastbourne South 1, York Bay 2,' Day's Bay 3, Eastbourne North 4. Point Howard, also made a small table display. Mr. Righton, as sponsor of the competition, ,■ said that it had been most stimulating and very satisfactory from the point of view of sustaining interest. The tables competition had given the most modest gardeners the opportunity of .being, represented in the show. With "Da\yson City,"l Mr. F. G. Oddy, Lower Hutt, exhibited the champion trumpet, the champion non-trumpet, "Merkana," being shows by Miss A. C. Ingles, Eastbourne. Miss AI. Wood was honorary secretary and treasurer, and Miss V. Shortt her assistant. The narcissi and miscellaneous classes were judged by Mr. H. J. Poole, and the decorative and children's classes by Miss M. Cooper.
