GIFT OF SIX CHAIRS
MISSION TO SEAMEN
The Mission to Seamen has recently been donated by Miss Wittich and the staff of James Smith's tearoom with six comfortable chairs for use in the Mission Club room. The money to purchase these chairs has been raised 'by the sale of wishbones, which have been painted and decorated by . the staff. Some thousands of these have, been sold since the outbreak of war, enabling the staff to send from time to time donations of money to the Mission Fund any many other activities. The committee of the mission are Very busy entertaining the seamen, having had huge crowds to cater for recently, . . ; Knives, forks, and spoons are urgently needed for use at the mis- 1 sion. I A BUSY WEEK. | Many entertainments and outings were arranged during the past week for men of the Merchant Navy. Dances were organised by. the Lightkeepers' Guild on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, the hall being filled to capacity on each occasion. On Tuesday. a football match was played on Kaiwarra Park, another match, played on Wednesday, was held at Kilbirnie, and two matches were arranged for both Thursday and Saturday. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons seyeral buses were chartered to take men into the country. On the first drive the men were given the opportunity to'see the magnificent scenery through the Akatarawas, and then home down the west coast road. On Thursday buses called at the Brown Owl- and home via Haywards. On both occasions the men were served with high tea at the mission on their return. It was gratifying to the workers to hear the men's deep appreciation of what was done for them. Hostesses for the week were Mesdames Mackersey, D. T. Davies,^ Beattie, McDermot, Harley Brown, Hamilton, and Walton.
