FLAK SHIP'S FATE
EXPLODES DURING ATTACK
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) . RUGBY, Sept. 8. How a German flak ship was destroyed off Ostend today by a Spitfire armed with cannon and machineguns is told by the Air Ministry news service. The Spitfire was on reconnaissance when the pilot saw three flak ships • near Ostend. He dived on them, and while he was still firing his first burst,, saw one of the ships explode and its superstructure disintegrate, throwing pieces in the air. His comment on his return was: "It is probable that I hit the magazine. I broke off the engagement -while I was still 200 yards away from the wreckage." Flak ships are the equivalent of British anti-aircraft ships*, and are usually * i the. size of large trawlers. They carry j powerful anti-aircraft batteries in bow and stern.-j8.0.W.
