"NIGGARDLY"
NEW TRAM SECTIONS
, OVERCROWDING WORSE
The view that the alteration in the tram sections on the shorter western suburbs route had been carried out in a niggardly manner was expressed at a meeting of the Karori Progressive Association, at which that and other matters relating to the tram service were discussed.
One large section of the residents, it was stated, were being penalised by the change, though those at the terminus and in that vicinity had gained a section. The general opinion of the association's committee was that one section should have been from Lambton Quay to the foot of the Rigi, the next to Hatton. Street, and the other from there to/the terminus. By that arrangement the sections would be made more even, and the interests of the residents as a whole would be more fairly served. It was pointed out also that the arranging of sections in that manner would" more closely coincide, with the adjustment that members were led to believe would take place.
In view of the extent of saving in running costs, it was considered that the treatment meted out to the Northland and Karori people could have been on much more generous lines.
It was reported that complaints continued to be received about excessive overcrowding on the trams. The matter had been brought to the notice of the City Council from time to time, but instead of an improvement being effected, the position was becoming steadily worse. There had been instances, it was stated of passengers becoming ill through the congestion on the trams.
The executive was strongly of the opinion that something should have been done long ago to alleviate the position, and it emphasised the need of having the matter treated as one for urgent action.
