CLERICAL WORKERS
(To the Editor.)
Sir,— May Ibe allowed.to comment briefly on a circular from the revision committee of clerical workers, to which I see attention was drawn in "The Post" recently? In my opinion, as a member of the union for several years, this movement is indeed timely. The thorough revision of the rules and of the whole political scheme under which the Clerical Workers' Union functions has been a crying need almost from its inception. The "grounds of unrest" will, I am sure, find echoes of assent in the minds of the great majority of clerical workers. It is exhilarating to read that at long last apathy is being overcome by the members themselves and that they are really striving towards the attainment of more democratic conditions within their union.
I would like to commend one thought in particular to my fellow-clerical workers. I recall that numbers of my friends who 'are now in the fighting services have on numerous occasions expressed their strong disapproval of the conduct of affairs of the Wellington Clerical Workers* Union. CJthers again have merely shown cold indifference—being "fed up" long since. The annual report of the union indicated that many hundreds of members are now away doing their duty to their King and country on other fronts. These will include not only our boys, but also some of our girls. I would therefore commend to clerical workers—all- those who are "holding the fort" on the home front—the important duty of achieving, and then maintaining, a sound-and healthily; organised union which, will be in a position to render every possible assistance to our boys (and girls) when they resume civilian life. There is no hope of achieving this with a union whose membership is divided by the fact that the control is political.—l am, etc., ■:.■>■■■;■;■ HOME GUARD.
