THE SUN AND ITS SPOTS

The sun has not during the last few weeks very often presented itself for astronomical observation from the Carter Observatory, but on the comparatively few occasions when it has been glimpsed it has had an interesting tale to tell about its spots. About the middle of last month there was a short period when the sun was absolutely free from spots, such a phenomenon last being recorded on July 26, 1935 But towards the end of July the spot activity was almost equal to that of maximum years. A big group was then crossing the sun's disc, and this group was followed by several more. Then came another period of little or no activity, but just at present there is a return of the big group of spots seen at the end of last month, although activity has materially diminished. The present big spot is large enough to be seen by the naked eye through smoked or tinted glass.
