LOYALTY

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I would like to endorse the remarks regarding loyalty in Saturday's "Post" and the article attached. It was amazing to hear a member of Parliament call saluting the flag "raumbo jumbo." Maybe that is all it means to him. It is not the bit of bunting with its entwined crosses that we salute, but our Empire and that freedom it stands for. We should go down on our knees | and thank God that our flag can still be flown freely when so many have been torn down. No doubt • our teachers have reached a high standard as a whole, but each teacher has a class of from 40 to 50 pupils, and. as children's minds are so receptive it is apparent that even a semblance of disloyalty may have far-reaching effects, like the pebble thrown in the pond; and if a teacher has loyalty in his or her heart, why object to showing it?— I am, etc., LOYALIST. (To the Editor.) j Sir,—As a school teacher shortly to be | called up for active service, I would like to register a protest against the repeated attacks on pacifist teachers. Anyone with a practical knowledge of the educational curriculum of this country would realise that pacifist propaganda could not possibly be spread in the classroom to an extent that would influence the children. From my own observation, which is at least first-hand, the only exhortations the children receive that could possibly be termed "pacific" are those given by the visiting ministers in the course of their lessons on the teachings of Christ. If, then, the only objection to pacifist teachers is the common social objection to pacifists, why should so much prominence be given to conscientious objectors in this particular profession, rather than in other branches of society? Teaching children is a full-time job, and one that is not assisted by the unsubstantiated criticism of people outside the profession!. —I am, etc., JUSTICE.
