LONG VOYAGING

AN ISLANDS SCHOONER

Captain D. H. Cambridge, formerly master of the schooner Tagua, arrived from Suva at Rarotonga in his eleventon cutter Taipi on July 5, after travelling a sailing distance of some 4000 miles, states the Rarotonga correspondent of the United Press Association. The cutter is 47 feet overall and has a draught of 6£ feet, and is capable of carrying approximately 25 tons of cargo.

With a native sailor, Captain Cambridge left Suva some three months ago and after visiting some of the Fiji islands, called at Apia, Samoa. From there he left for Pukapuka and Nassau, returning to Pukapuka. He then proceeded to Suwarrow and from Suwarrow to Rarotonga.

The voyage of 500-odd miles from Suwarrow to Rarotonga took 22£ days Extremely bad weather was experienced and the vessel was hove to for eleven days. Food and water were practically finished by the time Rarotonga was reached. Captain Cambridge intends to remain in Rarotonga some time in order to make some adjustments to his craft.
