AMERICAN ARMY
MUST BE PREPARED
WIDE SPHERE OF ACTION
WASHINGTON,. August 17,
The United States army must be prepared to fight on the ice-bound coasts of the North Atlantic and the North Pacific as well as in the tropic heat of Panama, said the Secretary of War, Mr. H. L. Stimson, in a broadcast to American soldiers. At present the greatest danger was in Central and South America, he said.
If, by combining air attack with "fifth column" revolution, the Axis Powers succeeded in gaining a hold in South America, the United States would have a real task for American soldiers, already standing on guard on the east from Iceland to British Guiana, and on the west from Alaska to Panama.
"The Germans are now going into battle with their song 'Today Europe is Ours, Tomorrow the Whole World,'" said Mr. Stimson.
"We therefore ask army service men to give us that patriotic devotion, faith, and the spirit which will make the American armies unconquerable."
