ATTACK ON HIRANUMA

AXIS ADVANCE NEWS

REVELATION IN TOKIO

LONDON, August 17.

The Shanghai correspondent of the British United Press says it is reported in diplomatic quarters that Axis newspapermen telephoned the Home Ministry in Tokio ten hours before the attempted assassination of Baron Hiranuma, Minister without portfolio in the Japanese Government, asking whether he had been shot.

The police questioned other foreign correspondents closely as to whether they had advance knowledge of the plot.

Baron Hiranuma, who is regarded as a moderate, was shot by an assailant last Friday.
