The ■ ship canal which is cut through the rocky isthmus of Corinth, and which shortens the voyage from the lonian Sea on the west to the port of Athens by 200 miles. It is four miles long, and twice this month the R.A.F. has carried out heavy bombing attacks with a. view to preventing Us use by enemy shipping. Considerable landslides have been caused along its steep banks, sufficient to stop the passage of shipping for several months.
