FURNITURE TRADE

EMPLOYERS' YEAR

War problems and the depletion of man-power have brought about a serious situation particularly in relation to the staffing of factories, says the annual report of the Wellington Furniture and Furnishing Trades' Em ployers' Union for the year ended May 31. Greater unity amongst those engaged in the trade is urged. The union, after paying its way. had a credit balance of £82. Generally speaking, states the report, members responded to the levy to cover the cost of the Price" Fixation Committee; some could have shown greater support. A total of 3400 importations to New Zealand is shown in a Customs return appended, the majority being from the United Kingdom, and the next highest from Hong Kong Auckland importations totalled in value only oneeleventh of those in 1938, Wellington's only one-sixth, Lyttelton's less than one-ninth, and Dunedin's less than one-thirty-fifth. While values in money were comparatively higher for the same article than in 1938, the total value of imports into New Zealand for the year ended June - 30, 1941. fell from £29,004 for the former pex-iod to £3400. The following officers have been elected: —President Mr i. Campbell, vice-presidents, Messrs J. G Marshall and S. F B Tucker; executive Messrs C Parsonage, D Power H Fretchling. S Moses. E Pankhurst, and W Green hon. auditor. Mr. F W Vosseler, secretary and treasurer. Mr W J Mountjoy, representative on New Zea land Furniture Trades Association, Mr F Campbell.
